This is how I spent my Friday night. Well, I also made myself an excellent meal of steak, broccoli and mashed potatoes and then later I bought myself some new undies, but mostly I made this song.

It’s definitely a work in progress. It’s not mixed, mastered, and I’m probably going to muck around with the actual arrangement as well so the final result should sound pretty different, but eh, we’ll see if I ever get around to it. There’s some harsh dissonance toward the end that I’m really not a big fan of.

The basic idea behind this song, if any of you are curious about how much of an artsyfartsylittlefaggot I am, was basically comparing my current life goals and ambitions with the ones I had when I was a young child and seeing how much your dreams change. Cliche thoughts from a growing boy~ Not very interesting, right? I know. I know.

Eventually, I do want to add vocals to it, but I say that about almost all my songs these days. Problem is, I really couldn’t sing a note to save my life, so most songs that I write with vocals in mind generally wind up sitting on the shelf forever.

In other news, I watched the movie 50/50 tonight. Good stuff, man. You should all go watch it.

I suck at house music, so I’ve been trying to practice it a lot lately. The biggest challenge for me is getting the snare right. There’s a distinct sound that I’m after that’s very prevalent in popular music today, where the hit on 2 and 4 is far more of an accent than a second hit. For this song, I wound up giving up and using a pre-made loop (I’m ashamed, I’m ashamed!).

I’m not sure if it’s a timing thing, a mixing technique, or the sample selection. Regardless of what it is, I can’t seem to get it right on my own. I feel like this is something incredibly simple and I’m just looking over something blatantly obvious.

I was talking to my friend, the artist Haywyre, the other day and he mentioned that he generally has the snare hit a few milliseconds before the bass drum rather than on time with it, while sidechaining the snare with the kick but it still didn’t turn out with the sound I’m after. If any fellow producers out there have any tips, let me know!

#OPA (ALMOST TECHNICOLOR & A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA). the idea to release remastered songs sort of came to us by accident. i was really only going to collect the old songs into an EP, slap a random cover on it and call it a day; but when i talked to almost technicolor about it, he mentioned that he’d already remastered one of the songs (this one, incidentally) — so why not just remaster the remaining two?

anyway. i do like this more than the original. hope you enjoy listening to it as well.

“It’s just… that he was all alone. Always by himself. Never anyone to share the game. A man who lived in dreams. That’s who he was.”

Working on a cover of Chasing Cars. Instrumental is done, still working on the vocals (which will replace the bells).

I had an idea to try making a song using analog synthwaves only, without additional processing or effects and made this.
